Nationwide Invitation to Prayer

WHAT

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities announced a nationwide invitation to prayer.

On March 26, 2024 the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that has the potential to make a major impact in the widespread accessibility of chemical abortion (abortion pills). Chemical abortions are now the most common form of abortion in the United States.

The USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities is inviting Catholics to join a focused effort of prayer for the end of abortion and for the protection of women and pre-born children, beginning on March 25, the eve of the oral arguments, and the anniversary of St. John Paul II’s landmark, pro-life encyclical, The Gospel of Life (Evangelium vitae).

HOW

Offer this Prayer to St. Joseph, Defender of Life daily:

Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel, you lovingly took Mary into your home. As God’s humble servant, you guided the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland for the safety of both Mother and Child.

We praise God that as their faithful protector, you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to you. May your example inspire us also to welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most precious gift of life.

Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life —especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen.

WHEN

March 25, 2024 through June 2024, when a decision is expected.

JOIN US FOR A WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY!

Wednesdays 6:15pm-7:15pm at the Landsmann Center

The study will begin with a video explanation of the upcoming Sunday Mass readings by Brant Pitre followed by a group discussion.

The study is designed to give a more in-depth understanding of the Sunday readings.

From the Pastor: April 21, 2024 - Good Shepherd Sunday

Today, our readings focus on Jesus’ love for us and His mission to protect and save each and every one of us. Peter continues in his ‘You Can’t Touch This’ mode as he addresses the Sanhedrin, calling them out and assuring them that the Jesus they put to death is alive and well and at work in them. He also warns them that there is no salvation other than through Jesus, the cornerstone they have rejected.

St. John points out that God the Father loves each of us so deeply that He has adopted us as His children! In our Gospel reading, Jesus reveals the intimate relationship He seeks with each of us… as the Good Shepherd. He is the shepherd who gives his life for his sheep and wants to bring all sheep into his fold, referring to the Gentiles—those the leaders of His day considered unclean and avoided like the plague!  The lost and forsaken… you and me!

The Gospel reading offers us both comfort and a challenge.  Not only are we assured of the Good Shepherd’s care, we are called to be good shepherds to those entrusted to our care.  This is a great honor and challenge, especially to me.  The Latin root of Pastor, “pascere” means shepherd (fed, grazed).  At every mass, my parting words to Jesus as I return His precious body to the Tabernacle are for you.  I ask the Lord to watch over and guide my every step, word, and action so that I might successfully guide those He has entrusted to me to the fullness of His truth and His love.  What a daunting and exhilarating opportunity!   Please keep that intention in your prayers.

We also pray for Vocations this Sunday, especially to the priesthood.  It is such a wonderfully rich and rewarding way to follow Christ and to experience intimacy with Him as I never imagined.

Our current and intensifying priest shortage is one of the leading reasons I have decided not to continue the 6:00 PM Mass at Philomena. Five masses in a weekend could prove to be a challenge to staffing in the future, and I have several brides desiring weddings on Saturday evenings now that our Diocese allows them. My apologies for any inconvenience. I hope to see you all at one of the other four masses offered in our Cluster come May.

Blessings,

Fr. Eddie

"Communication is a means of expressing the missionary vocation of the entire Church; today the social networks are one way to experience this call to discover the beauty of faith, the beauty of encountering Christ. In the area of communications too, we need a Church capable of bringing warmth and of stirring hearts" -Pope Francis
